  • A short boat ride from Narooma, Montague Island Nature Reserve is a must-see. The island is home to a historic lighthouse, built in 1881, and offers sweeping ocean views. It’s also one of the top wildlife experiences in NSW:

  • Seal Colonies – Snorkel or dive with playful Australian and New Zealand fur seals.

  • Penguin Tours – At dusk in spring and summer, watch hundreds of little penguins return to their burrows.

  • Whale Watching – From September to November, humpback whales pass close by, often putting on spectacular displays.

  • Birdlife & History – The island is an important habitat for seabirds and steeped in cultural history. Guided tours with NPWS bring the stories of Barunguba to life.

Millbay Boardwalk

The Mill Bay Boardwalk in Narooma is one of the town’s most popular attractions and a must-do for visitors. Stretching along the foreshore of Wagonga Inlet, the boardwalk offers calm, scenic views across turquoise waters and is perfect for a leisurely stroll, cycling, or even a bit of fishing.

Australia Rock

One of Narooma’s most iconic landmarks found near the entrance to Wagonga Inlet and Bar Rock Lookout, this natural rock formation has been shaped by wind and waves into the outline of Australia’s map. The area is also great for spotting seals that often bask on the nearby breakwall. It is easily accessible by car or on foot from town.

Wagonga Inlet

Wagonga Inlet is a sparkling, turquoise estuary surrounded by lush bushland and rolling hills. It’s perfect for swimming, kayaking and fishing. Fishing here is excellent with flathead, bream and whiting commonly caught. The inlet is also famous for its world-class Wagonga oysters, served fresh at local eateries or straight from the growers.

Surfing in Narooma

Surfing in Narooma offers waves for both beginners and experienced surfers along the South Coast’s pristine beaches. Popular spots like Bar Beach, Dalmeny Beach, and Handkerchief Beach provide consistent swells. Dalmeny Surf Academy offers coaching for beginners through to expert abilities.

Wildlife encounters

Narooma is one of the best places in Australia to spot marine life. From the shore you might see seals basking on the rocks, while dolphins and migrating whales pass close to the coast from June to October. For birdwatchers, the area’s wetlands and forests are teeming with native species.

Narooma to Dalmeny Coastal Trail

This scenic walking and cycling route stretches for several kms. The trail offers breathtaking views of rugged cliffs and pristine beaches from Narooma to Dalmeny. Along the way, you can spot local wildlife such as seals, seabirds, and even dolphins offshore.
